Focus and Scope

Islamic economics, finance, business, and sustainable socioeconomic development

Focus

EKONOMIKA SYARIAH: Journal of Economic Studies is an open-access, peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to advancing research in Islamic economics, finance, and business. The journal publishes original empirical, theoretical, and policy-oriented studies that examine economic behaviour, markets, financial institutions, and socioeconomic development through Islamic economic principles, Sharia governance, and ethical perspectives.

The journal particularly encourages rigorous research on Islamic banking and financial markets, zakat and waqf, Islamic social finance, the halal industry, Islamic fintech, and microfinance-led economic empowerment. It aims to strengthen theoretical understanding, generate credible empirical evidence, and inform policies and practices that promote equitable and sustainable economic development.

Interdisciplinary and comparative studies are welcome when their connection to Islamic economics or finance is direct, analytical, and central to the research questions and scholarly contribution.

Scope of Topics

The journal welcomes original and methodologically rigorous scholarship in the following eight areas:

01Islamic Economic Thought and Public Policy

Studies of Islamic economic thought, maqasid al-Shariah, distributive justice, economic governance, public finance, social welfare, and the formulation and evaluation of policies informed by Islamic economic principles.

02Islamic Banking, Governance, and Regulation

Research on Islamic banking performance and resilience, institutional efficiency, risk management, Sharia governance and compliance, auditing, financial regulation, and the protection of Islamic financial consumers.

03Islamic Capital Markets and Investment

Research on sukuk, Islamic equities and investment funds, Sharia-compliant asset allocation, portfolio performance, market efficiency, volatility, financial risk, and responsible investment.

04Zakat, Waqf, and Islamic Social Finance

Studies of zakat, infaq, sadaqah, waqf, and Islamic philanthropy, including institutional accountability, resource mobilisation, programme effectiveness, poverty alleviation, and social inclusion.

05Islamic Microfinance and Community Empowerment

Research on Islamic microfinance, Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (BMT), Islamic cooperatives, financing for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, financial inclusion, and community economic empowerment.

06Halal Industry, Islamic Business, and Consumer Behaviour

Studies of halal certification, halal value chains, Islamic entrepreneurship, ethical business and marketing practices, and consumer decisions analysed within an Islamic economic framework.

07Islamic Fintech and Digital Financial Systems

Research on Islamic financial technology, digital Islamic banking, Sharia-compliant financial products and platforms, technology adoption, trust, financial literacy, and digital financial inclusion.

08Sustainable and Inclusive Islamic Economic Development

Studies of inclusive growth, Islamic approaches to sustainability, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, green and social sukuk, responsible finance, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) where the Islamic economic contribution is explicit.

Research Approaches and Scholarly Contributions

The journal considers quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, conceptual, and comparative research, provided that the chosen approach is appropriate to the research questions and supported by transparent methods and credible evidence.

Systematic literature reviews, meta-analyses, and bibliometric studies may also be considered when they offer a well-defined research problem, a rigorous method, and a substantive critical or theoretical contribution rather than a descriptive summary of publications.

All manuscripts must identify a meaningful contribution to Islamic economic theory, empirical evidence, institutional practice, business decision-making, or public policy. The Islamic economic dimension should be evident in the study's conceptual framework, analysis, and interpretation of the findings.

Out-of-Scope Manuscripts

To maintain a coherent scholarly identity, the journal does not normally consider studies whose primary contribution lies outside Islamic economics, finance, or business.

Examples include:

  • Studies of conventional banking, finance, economics, or management that do not offer a substantive Islamic economic or Sharia-related analysis.
  • Research on the SDGs, environmental awareness, or sustainability that has no demonstrable connection to Islamic economic mechanisms, institutions, financial practices, or policy.
  • General studies of education, religion, culture, or social behaviour that do not address a clearly defined economic, financial, or business question relevant to the journal.
  • Technology-development or digital-platform studies without a meaningful contribution to Islamic finance, the halal economy, Islamic business, or related economic practices.
  • Purely descriptive reports or commentary that lack a clear research question, adequate scholarly evidence, or an original contribution.

The use of Islamic terminology, references to Muslim populations, or the inclusion of SDGs does not, by itself, establish a manuscript's suitability. Interdisciplinary studies may nevertheless be considered when their contribution to Islamic economic scholarship is convincingly demonstrated.

The Editorial Board may decline manuscripts that do not sufficiently align with the journal's stated focus and scope.

Intended Readership

The journal serves academics, economists, researchers, policymakers, Islamic banking and finance professionals, regulators, zakat and waqf institutions, halal-industry stakeholders, entrepreneurs, and practitioners concerned with Islamic economic scholarship and its application.
