Negotiating Continuity and Change: As’adiyah and The Transformation of Normative Authority in Contemporary Indonesia

Abstract

This article examines the transformation of As’adiyah’s normative authority as an influential regional Islamic educational institution and religious organization in contemporary Indonesia. Departing from the premise that Islamic authority is not static, this study highlights how As’adiyah negotiates the continuity of the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah tradition, particularly the Shāfiʿī school of law, in responding to contemporary social changes. The main objective of this research is to elucidate the normative sources of legitimacy, mechanisms of scholarly reproduction, and strategies through which As’adiyah transforms and sustains its authority within its contemporary socio-historical context. Employing a qualitative approach that integrates library research and fieldwork, the data were collected from literature authored by members of the As’adiyah community, in-depth interviews with both internal and external actors, and direct observations conducted at As’adiyah’s central institution and its branches. The findings demonstrate that As’adiyah’s authority is rooted in classical Islamic scholarly and normative traditions, reproduced through educational institutions, scholarly transmission, and leadership structures, and adaptively transformed to address contemporary social and religious issues. This study contributes to a renewed understanding of normative authority as a dynamic process through which scholarly traditions, interpretive frameworks, and institutional practices are continuously reproduced, negotiated, and reformulated in changing social contexts.
