Journal History

HuRuf Journal: International Journal of Arabic Applied Linguistic is a peer-reviewed and open-access scholarly journal published by Universitas Islam Negeri Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The following chronology presents the major milestones in the journal's establishment and development.

  • June 2021: HuRuf Journal published its inaugural issue, Volume 1, Number 1, marking the beginning of its scholarly publication in Arabic language studies and applied linguistics. The first issue consisted of eight original research articles involving authors from Indonesian institutions and an international institution in Morocco.
  • 2021: The journal established its formal publication identity with e-ISSN 2798-8821, p-ISSN 2798-9402, and the Crossref DOI prefix 10.30983/huruf. Digital Object Identifiers are assigned to published articles to support permanent identification, discoverability, and scholarly citation.
  • 2021–2022: HuRuf Journal maintained its biannual publication schedule, with issues published in June and December. During this period, the journal began expanding its international authorship through contributions from Indonesia, Morocco, Sudan, Algeria, the United Arab Emirates, and India.
  • 2023: The journal strengthened its international academic network. Volume 3, Number 1 included contributions from authors affiliated with institutions in Indonesia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, while Volume 3, Number 2 involved authors from Indonesia and Malaysia.
  • 2024: HuRuf Journal continued to broaden its institutional and geographical representation. Volume 4, Number 1 published seven original research articles written or co-written by 18 authors from nine affiliations in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka.
  • 2025: The journal demonstrated further growth in international authorship and institutional diversity. Volume 5, Number 1 contained eight original research articles involving 21 authors from ten affiliations in Indonesia and Malaysia.
  • December 2025: Volume 5, Number 2 was published with eight original research articles written or co-written by 20 authors from six institutional affiliations in Indonesia, Nigeria, and Jordan. This issue marked an important development in the journal's geographical reach beyond Southeast Asia.
  • January 10, 2026: HuRuf Journal was officially included in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). This recognition strengthened the journal's commitment to transparent editorial practices, immediate open access, copyright retention, digital preservation, and internationally recognized open-access publishing standards.
  • June 2026: HuRuf Journal published Volume 6, Number 1 and continued to develop its scholarly coverage in Arabic applied linguistics, Arabic language learning and teaching, translation studies, stylistics, discourse, grammar, semantics, pragmatics, and technology-supported Arabic language education.
  • 2026: HuRuf Journal achieved national accreditation as a SINTA Rank 2 journal based on the Decree of the Director General of Research and Development, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia Number 355/DST/D.D1/HM.01.01/2026. The accreditation is effective beginning with Volume 6 Number 2 (2026).
  • Present: HuRuf Journal continues to strengthen its editorial independence, double-anonymous peer-review process, publication ethics, international editorial collaboration, metadata quality, digital preservation, and global visibility. The journal is committed to becoming a reputable international platform for research in Arabic applied linguistics and related interdisciplinary fields.
