Journal History

HUMANISMA: Journal of Gender Studies is a peer-reviewed and open-access scholarly journal published by the Center for Gender and Children Studies, Universitas Islam Negeri Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Since its establishment, the journal has developed as an academic platform for interdisciplinary research on gender, women, family, children, sexuality, religion, culture, politics, education, law, and other contemporary gender-related issues.

The following chronology highlights the major milestones in the development of HUMANISMA: Journal of Gender Studies.

  • 2017 — Establishment and First Publication: HUMANISMA: Journal of Gender Studies began publication in 2017. Its inaugural issue, Volume 1, Number 1, was published in June 2017. Since its establishment, HUMANISMA has provided a scholarly platform for research and academic discussion concerning gender and child studies from multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives.
  • 2017 — ISSN Registration: HUMANISMA was officially registered as an academic periodical with p-ISSN 2580-6688 and e-ISSN 2580-7765. The journal has maintained a semiannual publication schedule, publishing two issues each year.
  • 2017–2018 — Development of Digital Scholarly Publishing: HUMANISMA strengthened its electronic journal management through the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform and expanded the digital accessibility of its scholarly publications. Published articles were made openly accessible to support wider dissemination, discoverability, and academic citation.
  • 2019 — First National Accreditation: HUMANISMA achieved its first national journal accreditation as a SINTA Rank 4 journal based on the Decree of the Director General of Research and Development Strengthening, Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number 36/E/KPT/2019. This milestone represented formal national recognition of the journal's editorial management, publication consistency, and scholarly quality.
  • 2020–2021 — Strengthening Editorial and Scholarly Quality: HUMANISMA continued to improve its editorial management, double-blind peer-review process, publication ethics, digital accessibility, and scholarly visibility. During this period, the journal consistently published research addressing gender issues from social, religious, educational, legal, economic, cultural, historical, and interdisciplinary perspectives.
  • 2022 — Institutional Transformation: Following the institutional transformation of Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Bukittinggi into Universitas Islam Negeri Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi under Presidential Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 85 of 2022, the journal's institutional identity and publisher affiliation were subsequently updated to reflect the new university status.
  • 2022–2023 — Expansion of International Authorship: HUMANISMA increasingly expanded its international academic network. Volume 6, Number 2 of 2022 featured authors from institutions in Ethiopia, Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, Australia, Malaysia, and Indonesia. This international development continued in Volume 7, Number 1 of 2023, which included contributors affiliated with institutions in Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, India, the Philippines, and the Netherlands.
  • 2024 — Improvement to SINTA Rank 2: HUMANISMA achieved a significant improvement in its national accreditation by attaining SINTA Rank 2 through the Scientific Journal Accreditation Period II of 2024. The accreditation results were communicated through Letter Number 1439/E5/DT.05.00/2024 and form part of the national journal accreditation decision for Period II of 2024. This achievement marked an important advancement in HUMANISMA's editorial governance, academic quality, publication consistency, scholarly impact, and national recognition.
  • 2024–2025 — Strengthening International Visibility: HUMANISMA continued to strengthen the international composition of its authors, reviewers, and editorial network. Volume 8, Number 1 of 2024 included contributions from Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan, while Volume 8, Number 2 expanded its authorship to Indonesia and Malaysia. In December 2025, Volume 9, Number 2 featured 25 authors from 18 institutional affiliations across Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, and Egypt.
  • 2025–2026 — Internationalization of Editorial Governance: HUMANISMA strengthened its international editorial structure by involving scholars and experts from universities and research institutions across Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Americas, Australia, the Middle East, and Africa. This development forms part of the journal's commitment to enhancing the quality and international diversity of its editorial and peer-review processes.
  • June 10, 2026 — Publication of Volume 10: HUMANISMA published Volume 10, Number 1, marking a decade of publication volumes since its establishment. The issue consisted of eight original research articles and included authors affiliated with institutions in Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Netherlands, and the United States. This issue reflects HUMANISMA's continued development toward broader international authorship and scholarly collaboration.
  • Present: HUMANISMA: Journal of Gender Studies is currently nationally accredited as a SINTA Rank 2 journal and continues to publish two issues annually. The journal is committed to strengthening editorial governance, rigorous peer review, publication ethics, international authorship, editorial diversity, metadata quality, digital preservation, open-access dissemination, and global scholarly visibility.

Today, HUMANISMA continues its mission to become a reputable academic platform for high-quality and impactful research on gender and child studies, particularly within Southeast Asia and other culturally diverse societies. The journal encourages interdisciplinary scholarship that contributes to theoretical development, evidence-based policy, social transformation, gender equality, and the protection and empowerment of women and children.
