Journal History
Al-Hurriyah: Jurnal Hukum Islam is a peer-reviewed and open-access scholarly journal published by the Faculty of Sharia, Universitas Islam Negeri Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Since its establishment, the journal has continuously developed its editorial management, academic quality, national accreditation, and international scholarly visibility. The following chronology highlights important milestones in the development of Al-Hurriyah.
- 2013: Al-Hurriyah was first established and published in printed form under the name Al-Hurriyah. The journal was developed as an academic platform for disseminating scholarly works and discussions related to Islamic law and its development in Muslim societies, particularly in Indonesia.
- 2016: The journal entered an important phase of digital transformation. Its name was developed into Al-Hurriyah: Jurnal Hukum Islam, and its editorial and publication processes began to be managed through Open Journal Systems (OJS). The journal was also registered with Crossref, enabling published articles to receive persistent Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs).
- 2016: Following its transition to online journal management, Al-Hurriyah began its current volume sequence with Volume 1, Number 1 (2016). The journal has since maintained a biannual publication schedule, publishing two issues each year in June and December.
- 2017: Al-Hurriyah achieved its initial national journal accreditation and was recognized as a SINTA Rank 5 journal. This achievement marked an important milestone in the development of its editorial governance, peer-review management, publication consistency, and national academic visibility.
- 2021: Al-Hurriyah continued to strengthen its publication quality and international scholarly engagement. Beginning with Volume 6, Number 2 (2021), the journal entered the accreditation period that would subsequently be recognized at SINTA Rank 3.
- 2022: Al-Hurriyah achieved a significant improvement in its national accreditation status. Based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia Number 204/E/KPT/2022, the journal was upgraded from SINTA Rank 5 to SINTA Rank 3. The accreditation applied from Volume 6, Number 2 (2021) through Volume 11, Number 1 (2026).
- 2023–2024: Al-Hurriyah continued to broaden its international authorship and institutional diversity. During this period, published articles involved scholars affiliated with institutions from several countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Egypt, Italy, Yemen, and Libya. This development strengthened the journal's role as an academic forum for Islamic legal studies beyond the Indonesian context.
- 2025: The journal further expanded its international scholarly network. Volume 10, Number 1 featured authors affiliated with institutions in Indonesia, Nigeria, and Malaysia, while Volume 10, Number 2 included authors from Indonesia and Jordan. This geographical diversity demonstrated the journal's growing international reach and academic collaboration.
- 2026: Al-Hurriyah reached another major milestone by achieving SINTA Rank 2 accreditation. The new accreditation status was granted under the Decree of the Director General of Science and Technology, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia Number 355/DST/D.D1/HM.01.01/2026, concerning the New Accreditation Rankings of Scientific Journals for Period 3 of 2025. This advancement from SINTA Rank 3 to SINTA Rank 2 reflects the journal's continuous improvement in editorial governance, peer-review quality, publication consistency, scholarly contribution, and academic visibility.
- July 31, 2026: Al-Hurriyah published Volume 11, Number 1 (June 2026). The issue continued the journal's commitment to publishing contemporary Islamic legal scholarship and included contributions from Indonesian and international scholars, including an author affiliated with the International Islamic University Islamabad, Pakistan.
- Present: Al-Hurriyah: Jurnal Hukum Islam is nationally accredited SINTA Rank 2 and continues to strengthen its position as a reputable scholarly journal in Islamic legal studies. The journal is committed to publishing original, methodologically rigorous, and academically significant research while strengthening international authorship, editorial governance, publication ethics, digital preservation, citation impact, and global scholarly visibility.
