Modern Islamic Studies and Sharia Research (MISSR) is a refereed academic journal that aims to examine contemporary developments in Islamic thought, modern applications of Sharia, and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of Islam in the modern world. The journal promotes scholarly engagement with themes such as Islamic reformism, maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, socio-legal transformation, Islamic epistemology, and the dynamic interaction between classical teachings and modern contexts.
MISSR is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal published by the Postgraduate Faculty of Universitas Islam Negeri Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Indonesia. It publishes original research articles and conceptual papers that contribute to the evolving discourse on Islamic studies and Sharia research (see Focus and Scope). The journal is published twice a year, in June and December.
Since its inception in 2025, MISSR has positioned itself as a platform for critical inquiry and intellectual exploration of Islam’s relevance in addressing contemporary issues. In 2025, the journal adopted the Open Journal System (OJS) and became registered with Crossref, with each article assigned a DOI to ensure persistent access and citation. The journal is also indexed by Google Scholar, Moraref, Garuda, and See More.
