Abstract

Abstract : Basically every individual has a self-concept that will affect individual behaviour in facing the problems. Students as growing individuals definately have problems such as too many credit, lecture demands, and friendship problems. In this kind of situation, self- concept plays a role. Not many students are able to solve the problem well. Sometimes to defend himself in the correct state when facing problems, someone forms a defense mecha - nism to reject or to change the reality, but at the same time protecting himself from conflict and anxiety. This is quantitative study with correlational research design. The popu lation in this study was 452 people and 102 were taken as samples with a questionnaire as data collection tool. The technique of data analysis used simple statistic and SPSS was used to correlate research variables. The study revealed that that self-concept of STAIN Bukittinggi students majoring Counseling is generally medium. There is significant correlation be - tween self-concept and defense mechanism in facing problems 0.433. Hence, the connec - tion strength between self-concept and defense mechanism shown by counseling students in facing problems is categorized fair or medium.
