Abstract

This study explores the challenges of intercultural communication in the digital era, focusing on the phenomena of atemporality and information overload emerging on social media platforms. Digital communication often occurs without clear temporal or cultural context, leading to confusion and misinterpretation among users from diverse cultural backgrounds. The purpose of this research is to identify the nature of these challenges and examine the strategies individuals use to navigate them. The study employs a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews. Eight student participants from Universitas Negeri Makassar were selected, all of whom actively engage in online intercultural interactions. The data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns of experience and response among participants. Findings reveal that participants experienced stress due to the overwhelming volume of information and temporal disorientation. They found it difficult to distinguish accurate and relevant information. In response, participants adopted strategies such as source verification, fact-checking, and improving their media literacy. This research contributes to strengthening the role of digital literacy and cultural awareness as essential tools for countering disinformation. It also recommends the development of social media features that promote contextualized and inclusive intercultural communication.
